Based on three concepts of foot techniques, hand techniques, and mental discipline,
Taekwondo was exclusively developed in Korea for more than 20 centuries. Eventually,
the art form entered mainstream society as a popular sport. Taekwondo features mainly
the use of bare fists and feet in self-defense.
As a worldwide sport, Taekwondo has gained popularity internationally with more
than 50,000,000 people enrolled in schools in 160 countries. Taekwondo was
an exhibition game in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics
in Spain. In 1994, the International Olympic Committee chose Taekwondo as
an official sport beginning with the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia.
