Taxi is a popular form of transportation in Korea. There are many taxi stands in most busy
city areas and taxis may also be hailed on the streets. Certain taxis can be requested by phone,
and the fare for these special call taxis is somewhat higher. Available taxis are identified by a
red light just inside the passenger-side windshield. An increasing number of taxi drivers speak
English and certain taxis offer a free interpretation service for English, Japanese,
and Chinese via mobile telephone.
There are three types of taxis - regular, deluxe and call - and all are available 24 hours a day.
Although taxi fares are relatively cheap, it is best to avoid taking one during rush hours.
Like other big cities in the world, Seoul is densely populated and has heavy traffic congestion
at those times. During rush hours, it is difficult to arrive on time even if you take a taxi,
and it will likely cost more than other forms of public transportation.
Regular taxis are usually silver or white and have a light cap that reads "Taxi".
When the light cap is on, it means the taxi is available. If the light cap is off,
it means the taxi is occupied. Fares start from KRW 1,900 and KRW 100 is charged for
every 168m or 41 seconds. From midnight to 4am, there is an additional charge of 20%
and the basic fare starts from KRW 2,280.
Deluxe taxis are black with a yellow band and the fare is 4,500 won for the first 3Km and
200 won for each additional 205m or 50 seconds. There's no late-night surcharge.
They are usually found waiting at major hotels and transport terminals.
Call services are run by deluxe taxis and regular taxis. Taxi requests should be
called in at least 10-15 minutes before you wish the taxi to arrive.
