Birth may be declared on the family register of a Korean national parent when at least one
of the parents is a Korean national. If both parents are foreigners, the baby does not acquire
Korean nationality even if born in Korea. The parents should check with their embassy in Seoul
for birth declaration procedures.
The birth is declared with the city (gu) or township office of the place where the
newly born baby or the declarant has permanent domicile or where the baby is born.
Birth should be declared within one month of the birth day. If not declared within
the required period, a fine is imposed on the person who is liable to declare the birth.
A birth statement signed by a doctor, midwife or others involved in a baby¡¯
s delivery should be attached to the birth declaration form.
If no one is involved in the delivery as the baby is not born at a hospital,
anyone who knows of the birth should sign a statement to attach to the birth declaration form.
